Offshore Buyer
John Crane Inc., a leader in engineered sealing systems for the industrial market, is seeking an Offshore Buyer to join our team in Morton Grove, IL. The Offshore Buyer’s primary responsibilities are; to purchase complex components, assemblies or services to support manufacturing facility’s production plans and to coordinate sourcing activities with Sourcing Engineers and other Buyers as required. Other responsibilities include the coordination of diverse, technical commodity areas and optimizing the logistic functions of the above activity to result in the highest quality at the lowest possible total procurement cost. The primary focus will be on offshore activity but domestic purchasing activity may be required. In addition, special projects as required.
Primary Responsibilities include:
Review and process requisitions;
Prepare purchase orders or bid requests for a wide variety of materials/services.
Coordinate activities with Engineers and Sourcing Engineers on offshore sourcing activity.
Coordinate tooling sample approvals with QA.
Coordinate imports where appropriate with Logistics.
Interview potential or current suppliers.
Analyze business conditions and process capabilities.
Develop and maintain supplier evaluation tools and records.
Perform cost/price analyses for a wide variety of commodities; remain current about technical aspects of assigned commodities.
Coordinate with engineering and manufacturing for value management.
Purchase complex, critical, and costly parts, supplies, materials and services.
Negotiate complex purchase agreements with suppliers.
Make on-site visits to suppliers to investigate their ability to meet quality requirements, specifications and delivery dates.
Maintain supplier evaluation tools and records.
Resolve more complex problems such as quality issues.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree plus three-five years purchasing experience as a buyer working in a MRP driven manufacturing environment with Offshore experience.
Offshore purchasing experience in China or India.
Full understanding of International logistics, Harmonized Tariff Codes, Duties and associated costs and processes.
Able to speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese.
Fully conversant with Microsoft products: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook.
Capable of international travel (probable up to 20%); passport and visas.
Work schedule to include adjustments to communicate via phone with international suppliers.
